Background of the Study
Infant mortality remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, with high rates of neonatal deaths attributed to preventable causes such as infections, prematurity, and complications during birth (Ibrahim et al., 2023). In Kebbi State, infant mortality rates are particularly high due to inadequate access to healthcare services, limited skilled healthcare personnel, and socio-cultural factors. Nurses, however, play a crucial role in reducing infant mortality by providing essential care, particularly in neonatal units, and through community health interventions.
Nurse-led interventions, including early detection of complications, vaccination programs, breastfeeding promotion, and health education, have been shown to significantly reduce infant mortality rates (Nwagbara et al., 2024). These interventions can help address the root causes of neonatal deaths and improve the overall survival rate of infants. This study aims to examine the role of nurse-led interventions in reducing infant mortality in Kebbi State, focusing on both clinical and community-level initiatives.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role nurses play in infant care, infant mortality rates in Kebbi State remain alarmingly high. Nurse-led interventions, such as immunization, breastfeeding education, and early detection of neonatal complications, are not consistently implemented due to challenges such as inadequate training, resource limitations, and lack of community engagement. This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in reducing infant mortality in Kebbi State and identify barriers to their widespread adoption.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the role of nurse-led interventions in reducing infant mortality in Kebbi State.
2. To assess the impact of nurse-led community health interventions on infant mortality in Kebbi State.
3. To identify the barriers to implementing nurse-led interventions in reducing infant mortality in Kebbi State.
Research Questions
1. What nurse-led interventions are being implemented to reduce infant mortality in Kebbi State?
2. What is the impact of nurse-led interventions on infant mortality rates in Kebbi State?
3. What are the barriers to the effective implementation of nurse-led interventions in reducing infant mortality in Kebbi State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce infant mortality in Kebbi State.
2. There is a significant correlation between nurse-led community health interventions and reduced infant mortality rates in Kebbi State.
3. Barriers such as resource limitations and inadequate training hinder the effective implementation of nurse-led interventions in reducing infant mortality in Kebbi State.
Definitions of Terms
• Nurse-Led Interventions: Healthcare strategies or actions initiated by nurses, such as health education, prevention programs, and direct clinical care, aimed at improving health outcomes.
• Infant Mortality: The death of infants before their first birthday, typically measured as a rate per 1,000 live births.
